Definitely NOT landed

DID HE LAND IT?

It’s a common question in skate, surf and windsurfing circles. Yes, he might have bailed a kickflip down a ten stair handrail, but that doesn’t really count as a land. In surfing you can’t claim airs that aren’t landed right back onto the wave face. In windsurfing, almost everybody can throw backloops, but it’s rare to see someone land one, and even more rare to land them consistently. A miss is as good as a mile. Photos can always lie..that is, unless they’re taken in sequence.

A picture tells a thousand words

A picture tells a thousand words. When a good sequence comes out it’s nice to see the move from beginning to end, landed successfully. Yes, he made it! Below are a few sequences of windsurfing moves, all shot in Taiwan (Taitung, on Taiwan’s east coast specifically). The sequences are mostly of aerials, and other moves, captured by intrepid photogs Yong-yi Chen, Alang Kuo and others.

WINDSURFING MOVE #1:

PUSHLOOP AT JINZUN (Oct 2020)

WaGaLiGong Dulan Surf/SUP House & Bar 哇軋力共都蘭衝浪:立槳:酒吧Windsurf Taiwan Taitung Dulan

The pushloop vs backloop dilemma

The backloop is more of an upwind horizontal 360. It’s easy to initiate, extremely difficult to land. It’s probably the first loop that most windsurfers attempt, but with very little success of landing. The backloop’s cousin, the pushloop, is a proper backwards somersault, which, although looks much harder, is actually easier to land.

However , it’s extremely hard to initiate simply because throwing yourself and your entire windsurfing kit up and over your head into a somersault is a bit of a mental nightmare. Ejecting when you are 15 feet up and upside down can be tricky. It feels like learning the forward loop all over again. Actually, worse, because unlike the forward, which can be practiced on flat water and built up to in small steps, the pushloop is pretty much all or nothing. Plus it requires some height in order for the mast to clear.

Years of failed backloop attempts

After years of failed backloop attempts, I decided to abandon trying them and focus on the pushloop instead. Something about turning 40 helps – things that previously were not important become now or never. I found that focusing on one move really helps.

Previously I had been using the “decide on the rotation (push vs back) when the time comes”, ie when you are already up in the air. So for example I would hit a ramp, half heartedly initiate a pushloop, half way through chicken out and end up with an overrated backloop. Crash! On one attempt I hit my chin so hard on the sail that it left an indentation. The attempts seemed to have no results except pain. All the fails were making me despondent and I was about to give up completely.

Takara the pushloop master

Takara Ishii's pushloop at Jinzun, Taiwan
Takara’s perfect pushloop

Then Takara Issii showed up for the 2019 Taitung Windsurfing Wave Classic. On one particular day at Jinzun, the wind was howling at 25 knots, with some head high steep ramps in front of the bunker. On Takara’s first run out he blasted into a huge backwards rotation. His body directly over the sail, he pushed down with his backhand and seemed to float effortlessly down, landing softly. Epiphany!

Focus Focus Focus!

From then on it was all about the pushloop for me. My biggest fear was landing wrong, knocking myself unconscious without anybody noticing. In Japan they train in groups of twos or threes, pushing and watching each other. They have parents and friends filming from the beach – then later they go home and analyse the footage. It’s safe and produces results. Just look at the current Japanese youth fleet! In Taiwan it’s pretty much each man/woman for himself when windsurfing. The windsurfers and kiters in Taiwan are more self absorbed, meaning that if you break down it might take some time before anyone even notices you are MIA, drifting away, injured or worse case – unconscious! But then summer came around and the wind stopped. I temporarily shelved the idea.

Watch online coaching videos!

The 2020 wind season began and I rekindled my obsession with the pushloop. Like a kid trying to figure out a kickflip or an ollie, I just had to figure it out. Fortunately there are tons of online coaching videos these days, so I immersed myself in any bit of info regarding this move. Thank you Youtube. So I kept trying. I knew that the only way was to forget the backloop completely, and focus only only one thing – over rotating straight away and pushing hard with my back hand.

Ask a friend to watch you

I had a few semi successful attempts. I’d go up, get stuck half way, and then end up plummeting down trying to avoid my equipment. On October 20th, I met up with a good friend who kites and windsurfs. The conditions looked ideal: solid 25knots, which meant I could use my smallest sail, a 4.0 square meter. Getting through the rotation with small gear really helps. And some pretty good waves with steep ramps in the medium range.

The boxing helmet

I told him I was going to attempt a loop. He opened his trunk and pulled out a boxing helmet! That was my cue. I felt invincible with the boxing hemet on. Plus with him watching from the beach, it gave me confidence to try. He would surely rescue me from death if I was knocked unconscious. I had a few practice runs, struggling to get the right ramps. I managed a few attempts but wasn’t committing 100 percent. So I decided to take a break and catch a few waves instead.

Relax

For a moment I forgot about the pushloop completely. I just enjoyed windsurfing empty Jinzun with the sun out. I’d caught a wave and ridden it in through Leftovers (see Takara’s aerial sequence below). On the way out, fully powered, a wave reared up just on the edge of the channel. I had a lot of time to think and prepare as I neared the ramp. Everything went slow mo for a moment as I hit and projected up, over and found myself staring down at my gear. That’s when your mind is telling you to eject, and that’s exactly what you shouldn’t do.

Use the wind to your advantage

Since I had never come this far, the experience was completely and utterly surreal. I pushed out with my back hand, the wind high fived me back. Like an invisible hand, the high five literally turned into a solid vertical upright push. Everything went from near death “I’m gonna die’ to calm as I landed on my feet and sailed away.

Alang Kuo just happened to be on the beach and captured the sequence, below. Thanks Alang!

WINDSURFING MOVE #2:

FRONTSIDE AIR IN THE DULAN BOWL (Nov 2019)

During the 2019 Taitung Windsurfing Wave Classic I got lucky and nailed a frontside air just as the wind started to die and the waves were getting really good. I still remember backdooring this one, coming up and just going for it, not really thinking too much. It felt so good when I landed it and I was even more stoked when Yong-yi told me she had got a sequence of it from the point. I like this sequence because it’s shot from an angle which is rarely photographed. Landed? Yes.

WINDSURFING MOVE #3:

CHEESEROLL AT JINZUN (Oct 2020)

Cesare Cantagalli

The cheeseroll has a long history. It was invented by the legendary Italian windsurfer Cesare Cantagalli (hence the name ‘Cheeseroll’) in the mid 80s when windsurfing was booming and Maui in Hawaii was holding up to three wavesailing contests per year. Competition was fierce and the sport was progressing fast. Cesare knew he had to come up with something fresh if he wanted to beat the best. So he snuck away to a secret beach and began practicing a forward rotation, which later morphed into the forward loop (see sequence #6). Check out the full story of how he invented the cheeseroll here.

Childhood Hero

Since I was a kid, I idolized Cesare Cantagalli. He was all over the windsurf magazines at the time. In 1987 our local mag Boardsailor came out and Cesare was on the cover performing a sky high cheeseroll during one of the Cape Town contests. My dad knew his then girlfriend’s father and got me a signed copy of the magazine and 3 of his used contest sails (for R300!). It was the surfing equivalent of acquiring Kelly Slater’s used surfboards. Next to his signature he had scribbled “keep windsurfing” and that’s exactly what I did.

In homage to my childhood hero, and because I just think this move looks so damn good, I had to crack the cheeseroll. Turns out that the cheeseroll, in my opinion, is one of the easiest rotations to perform. You don’t need much height to learn it and the wind takes care of most of the ‘spin’ once you initiate it. Tip: as you go up the wave face pretend you are about to do a laydown gybe, pushing the sail don towards the water.

WINDSURFING MOVE #4

TAKARA’s MAGIC AERIALS AT LEFTOVERS (Nov 2019)

photo of the year – Yong-yi Chen

Takara Ishii

Takara Ishii from Japan is an aerial master. We lost count of all the aerials he was punting on this day’s sailing at Leftovers, Jinzun. However, the crazy thing about this is not actually the move, but the place itself – the inside bowl at Leftovers. Look at the photo above and you’ll notice, from a different angle, how close Takara is doing these aerials to the shore. If he was to fall here he would go straight to the windless beach via the washing machine shorebreak.

WaGaLiGong Dulan Surf Hostel Taitung Taiwan
Takara timing the sets to get back out

Takara landed several beautiful textbook aerials right at this spot, but he also did crash a couple times and got washed right through the infamous shorebreak onto the beach (see photo above). Instead of walking all the way back up to the safer launch area near the bunker, Takara would just time the sets, run down into the water and throw his gear and swim for it till he was in the safety of the channel.

Check out the full sequence of one of Takara‘s magic aerials below.

WINDSURFING MOVE #5: OFF THE LIP AT THE BUNKER, JINZUN (Nov 2019)

This off-the-lip, right in front of the bunker at Jinzun, should have been stomped, stamped and declared legit at customs. However, it didn’t end up that way. It started well, the bottom turn put me in exactly the place I need to be to hit the lip as it cascaded towards me. I went up the face and got the kick as the lip pitched. But as I came down on the foam ball, the turbulence just ate me up, spat me out and caused me a ragdoll drag almost all the way to the shore, holding onto my boom. Being violently dragged along for 50 meters, afraid to lose your gear, while your arm feels like it will be ripped out of its socket, is not that much fun. Oh the pleasure and the pain. Hero or zero? Zero.

WINDSURFING MOVE #6: FORWARD LOOP AT BOB’S REEF (circa 2013)

Howard Chang’s Taitung invasion

I still remember this day. Bob’s Reef in about 25 knots. It was Howard Chang‘s first trip to Taitung. Nico brought him down to show us a thing or two. It was an eye opener for all of us. We had never seen windsurfing like this. A display of pure power, style and skill. Watching Howard was like hearing heavy metal for the first time. The guy was unstoppable and so much better than any of us. It was both inspiring and devastating at the same time. I remember this forward loop clearly because I doubt I will ever do anything like it ever again.

Send it

And the only reason I did it was because of Howard’s unearthly presence at that moment. I had been having a pretty average session, crashing my wave rides and watching Howard do everything from grubbies to aerials to big solid hacks on every wave he rode. We were both racing out, maxed out on 4.5s, just meters apart, when this shoulder high ramp appeared and I just sent it right in front of Howard. I remember the wave whipping me skyward and I immediately started the rotation, going endo (end over end).

The whip

It was surreal because time seemed to stand still and at the same time the ‘whip’ happened so fast. But I remember that at the apex of the rotation I sheeted out slightly and managed to slow down the descent. Therefore, I landed relatively softly on my tail. Howard had slowed down behind me to watch and saw the whole thing. He he gave me a yell of approval, which I will never forget. The windsurfing equivalent of a shaka from Kelly Slater. Landed? 100%.

Windsurfing in Dulan has been pretty good this season. Firstly, because the Anemoi (wind gods in Greek mythology) have relatively active compared to previous years. Secondly, because the waves have been quite decent also.

Except for the surf contest week in November, which made for excellent surf competition conditions, Taiwan’s east coast has been battered by the monsoon winds almost non stop from the end of September. And we were also gifted with waves in the 8 to 11 second range, which is not bad for Taiwan. Although Covid has kept our international friends from visiting, the small local crew of windsurfers have been jammin’ all season long so far.

Sessions – Anemoi is the latest video in the Sessions series. It was filmed over two sessions at Dulan Point. Dulan can be a tricky spot to sail. There is very little wind on the inside, so for those who are used to plane from the beach, this spot can be extremely frustrating.

Windsurfing Dulan: Cons

The cape to the north blocks most of the wind, so the wind line only begins about 100 to 200 meters offshore, depending on the wind direction. In winter, most of the sandy beach completely disappears and is replaced by slippery boulders. The launch can be a nightmare for first timers.

Windsurfing Dulan: Pros

But the up-side of sailing this spot is that, if you can make it to the outside, it’s a very forgiving wave and great to learn wave riding. The channel makes it easy to get out again after completing a wave. If you wipe out on a wave, the current usually pushes you into the channel. Then, assuming you didn’t ride the wave too far inside the wind shadow, it’s relatively easy to water start and get back out on a slog.

WAS THE 2020 WINDSURFING WAVE CLASSIC THE WINDIEST IN HISTORY?

Was this the windiest windsurf season in the history of windsurf seasons? Did the 2020 Taitung Windsurfing Wave Classic even happen? Yes, and No. With Covid 19 making it difficult/impossible for foreign nationals to visit Taiwan, technically there was no official wave jam this year in the sense that our international friends couldn’t join us. However that didn’t stop us from windsurfing our brains out. We still went on with local jams and sessions all fall. All the major spots saw some really amazing sessions. It was just like the old days, before foreigners began visiting here for windsurfing. Except locals only, literally.

TAIWAN OPEN OF SURFING

Risky Business

One twist: the Taiwan Open of Surfing organizers approached us to participate in their event as a ‘showcase’. It made perfect sense for them to reach out to windsurfers and kiters. In the previous 10 years of the event’s history, I can only recall two years when the wind didn’t blow at least 50% of the duration of each event. I can distinctly recall a few events where the wind blew over 20 knots the entire time! November, historically, is our windiest month by far.

Stand By

So to even attempt to run a surf competition during November is an extremely risky gamble, especially when the quality of your event relies heavily on wave quality AND spectators having something to watch. Therefore it wasn’t really a huge surprise when the event organizers approached us. The idea was to hand pick 5 to 10 of the best wave sailors (not hard at all when the local scene is so small), and to be on standby for in case (a high probability) the wind blew during the event. In which case spectators would have something else to see. Windsurfing and kitesurfing – surfing’s cousins, adapted to take advantage of the wind, would be there as backup, just in case. We were the insurance for in case the wind did blow.

Murphy’s Law

The wind turned itself off for the entire week the contest was held. Barely a breath. On one ‘promising’ day, the wind reach a max of 5 knots. Just enough for Jason Tsai to get going on his kite foil, but that was about it. This meant the surfers had amazing waves the duration of their event. Ironically, on the Monday or Tuesday after the event end, the wind returned in full force.

Below are some of the best photos taken during the 2020 windy season, broken down by spot sailed.

Bob’s Reef

Early season, Bob’s Reef was really good for windsurfing. When the bigger swells started to hit late October, things changed and Bob’s lost its magic. The channel seemed to close out even on small days. However, we still scored a few fun sessions right at the start of the season.

Dulan Point

Dulan is always a good back up spot when Bob’s isn’t going or nobody wants to drive up and check Jinzun. When it’s 30 knots and up it’s probably your best spot to windsurf at. The wave is usually not that powerful and if you wipe out on a wave you usually get washed into the channel. Dulan was windsurfed quite often during 2020, with Bob’s not really doing its thing.

Jinzun

Prior to the Taiwan Open of Surfing, the windsurfing sessions at Jinzun were absolutely phenomenal. Jinzun is really only windsurfed when it’s at least logo to mast high, sunny, and solid 25 knots and up. There were several days when all the conditions were lined up and solid. When this spot is working, it’s really hard to beat. In my opinion it may be the best down the line windsurfing spot in Taiwan. While Dulan can be quite forgiving, Jinzun takes no prisoners. There is really much less room for error at Jinzun – if you make a mistake you might take a trip to the rocks.

2020 WAVE JAM PARTY.

The 2020 Wave Jam Party took place on Saturday November 21st – good vibes on WaGaLiGong’s rooftop! So many things to celebrate, including getting through the craziest year in living history, that thing called Thanksgiving (if you come from North America) and the end of the Taitung Wave Classic. But at the end of the day, it was really just an excuse to have a braai. Simple. So combining Thanksgiving with our annual Wave Jam Party, adding some open mic and enjoying a BBQ were the order of the day/night.

Putad on fire

Local surfer/kitesurfer/muso Gabriel Gras made sure that his new band with Alvaro and Putad (who plays bass in Outlet drift) made their debut. Their new indie band blew the roof down (literally) and had the cops come out (twice). Putad seems to be enjoying her new role as front woman! John Zacks was on fire, initially goin’ at it with Long Beach Rob and was later joined by some members of the Night Owls. Johnson went on and braved it out with his banjo. Jordan, the kid who brought the house down at our Surf X Skate 2019 Party, made an appearance and wooed the crowd. Pete Brown was just always nearby punishing his violin, and he did a great song with his son Bailou.

Braai-a-thon

Meanwhile, Tienie and Mark made smoke with their braai-a-thon at the back. The only guy who complained was Jeff Pike (of course). All in all, the The 2020 Wave Jam Party was a great night. Thanks to all who showed up from far and wide – surfers, windsurfers, musicians, travelers and friends. We hope to continue the legacy of good vibrations and keep jamming and rocking.

THE STORY BEHIND OUTLET DRIFT’S LATEST MUSIC VIDEO ‘LADY OF THE OCEAN’.

Earlier this year, Dulan’s favorite indie rock band Outlet Drift approached us at WaGaLiGong to produce a music video for the the title track of their new album Lady of the Ocean. When your friends and idols ask you to make a music video for them, it’s difficult to say no. We have known the band since their humble beginnings nearly a decade ago. They play a unique and interesting infusion of punk, metal and indie with strong aboriginal undertones. And when they play live they always bring the house down. So when Putad (their bassist) and her husband Gabe (great surfer and musician in his own right) approached us with the offer to work together, it was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse.

Putad already had a basic idea of the general structure and storyline, so the concept was already there. The underlying theme of the song, she made clear, was depression/anxiety. We began planning the scenes straight away and within a few days I had found the coconut forest where the first scene takes place. Shooting began in true indie fashion, with only a drone, a GoPro, and an old Canon 5DM2 SDLR. To keep things simple, only one actress, Yong-yi Chen would appear in the entire film.

The girl slowly approaches the distant figure, but as she gets closer and closer, something feels off. That’s when things start to get really strange.

The chase

The girl’s alter ego takes off through the forest. The Girl in White follows her. A dramatic chase ensues, passing through some beautiful landscapes until they both end up at the ocean.

「海女」這首歌是一首關於焦慮與抑鬱的歌、關於感到失去方向、關於我們選擇在人們面前表現出來和我們選擇隱藏的樣子。Lady of the Ocean is a beautiful song about anxiety and depression. It’s about feeling lost and insecure. About maintaining our ‘faces’ – the ones we choose to show, often on social media, and the ones we hide. It’s a reflection of modern social media driven society.

The Lady of the Ocean

In the film, the Girl in White is eventually coaxed into the ocean. One of the girls feels entirely comfortable in the sea. The other struggles to stay afloat and eventually gives up and starts to drown.

At the end we realise the two ‘faces’ were actually two personas of the same individual. One confident, aloof and sure of herself. The other lacking in self confidence, searching for purpose and suffering from anxiety. Eventually, maybe through her near death experience, she makes peace with herself. She embraces both her strengths and accepts her weaknesses. But ultimately the viewer is left to decide whether she survives this ordeal or succumbs to it.

她獨自漂浮在廣大無盡的海洋中,顯得渺小而微不足道,好比茫茫人生。She floats on her back, this time lost on the vast ocean. She is miniscule and completely dwarfed by the vastness of the ocean, by life.

Thanks to..

我感到非常榮幸可以為「漂流出口」(我最喜愛的台灣樂團)製作這部音樂影片-「海女」。 回顧10年前我與漂流出口的相遇,正是在都蘭海邊救援溺水的他們。I was really honoured to have been asked by Outlet Drift, my favorite band in Taiwan, to make their music video for ‘Lady of the Ocean’. We have a long history – ironically we met due to two of the band members nearly drowning at Dulan Beach nearly a decade ago.

也非常開心我們有一個最佳演員-詠嬑,毫無演出經驗的她把「海女」的兩個樣子詮釋地很棒。 Delighted to have a natural born actress, Chen Yong-yi, as the Girl in White. Yong-yi is one of the managers of WaGaLiGong and also runs her SUP tour company called What’s SUP Dulan. Yong-yi, who has zero acting experience, did a great job portraying the complexities of the Girl in White.

感謝 布妲拉•碧海(阿妞), 給這部影片最初的雛形漂流出口, 做出這麼棒的音樂!Kui, 漂流出口最棒的製作領導人詠嬑, 如果沒有妳,就沒有這部影片Thanks to: Aniu, who had the vision from the start. Outlet Drift, for making real music! Kui: the producer and Outlet Drift’s producer – a true legend!

GOING DUTCH WITH 3 OP REIS (CHANNEL 3 TRAVELS) IN TAIWAN.

3 op Reis” (Channel 3 Travels), Holland’s premier travel show, paid a visit to Taiwan and ended up at WaGaLiGong Dulan Surf & SUP House. They spent a couple days with us at WGLG, guided by our watersports manager and SUP coach – Yong-yi Chen. The completed film is looking very lekker (Dutch for ‘great’). And guess who won the blonde vs brunette battle? Watch the video above to find out!

Blonde = Geraldine

The Dutch might not be famous for surfing but they sure as hell know how to make a good travel show. And when the hottest celeb in Holland (apparently) comes knocking you best show her a good time. That’s exactly what WaGaLiGong did when Drie op Reis, a very popular travel show, informed us that they were on their way to cover our surf camp in Taiwan. We met the show hostess Geraldine and the rest of the film crew. and were pleasantly surprised how un-celebrity like and down to earth they all were.

Brunette = Yong-yi Chen

WaGaLiGong’s SUP guide Yong-yi (the brunette), hosted and guided, showing the TV crew around the county’s beaches and scenic spots. Filming was quite exhausting, with many scenes having to be shot repeatedly to get the right take. The crew got to experience the WaGaLiGong SUP and surf lifestyle firsthand. They had a huge appetite for activity; stand up paddling up the beautiful Donghe river canyon, beach bonfires, dawn patrol sunrise surfing at Dulan Beach, and all guided by Dulan’s natural beauty – Yong-yi.

Hot pot with 3 op Reis

With filming complete and the director satisfied, we all ended up at a well-known local hot-pot restaurant to celebrate the end of the shoot. A great way to end the weekend with local food. They claimed it was their first time ever eating it. They also consumed a good quantity of beer. We had a good laugh with Holland’s sexiest blonde – Geraldine (pictured above), Simon (the director), Marloes (manager), and Albert (cinematographer).

SURF WINDSURF SPEARFISH DULAN.

Can you surf, windsurf and spearfish in Dulan, Taiwan? These are all great ways to immerse yourself in the ocean. What about skateboarding? Sure. WaGaLiGong Dulan Surf & SUP House & Bar presents a mixed bag of tricks with Sessions – MixTape Vol1. Mixtape is the latest video in the Sessions series. Sessions is 100% produced by us at WGLG. It’s a web series documenting a variety of stuff from surf, SUP, windsurf and spearfishing, music, culture, etc.

WGLG is lucky to have friends who do a whole bunch of stuff on and off the water, depending on the available conditions: waves, wind, concrete, mini ramps, fishable reefs, and garage jam nights. MixTape is a hotpot of old, new, GoPro, drone and smartphone footage. From spearfishing 20-kilo-plus giant trevally, in-the-pocket closeups of surfing and skating, to flying along the waves being pushed by the wind during monsoon season. Check out Sessions – MixTape.

SURFING DULAN – BACKYARD SESSIONS.

When the onshores let up and the sea gets glassy, surfing Dulan beachbreak can be a lot of fun. It can occasionally turn on several of its favorite right handers. It’s our backyard, which makes it even more fun to score it because it’s not really on the radar and doesn’t get crowded. When you check this spot frequently like we do, it can be rewarding. Good times were had this summer. One day in particular, with a Chilean friend Luigi who scored.

AFTER THE STORM

After the storm

Not a bad season for surfing, from point break lefts to beach break rights. Some breaks up the coast, including a sacred place that had never seen a contest, were working also. In December, on the finals weekend of the WSLs surf comp, things started to get tense between event organizers and spot regulars. The WSL decided to move their operation to a point break further north when Jinzun was forecast too big to break. A lot of people, including myself, were not happy about this, because it was to be broadcast live to millions of surfing netizens. Things got pretty heated. There was even talk of paddling out during the contest to prevent them from running heats. It was a tense, anxious week, with lots of unhappy faces. Eventually the WSL had their way and ran the comp.

When the WSL crowd finally moved on, it felt like everyone could breathe a collective sigh of relief. When it comes to the sensitive issue of WSL competitions,  most folk have no problem with the WSL holding their contest at Jinzun, as long as it stays in Jinzun. After the contest crowd left, life seemed to return to normal. Those that had been in hiding slowly crept out the woodwork to surf their beloved spot. There were quite a few days with not many peeps out.

Surf Lessons – WaGaLiGong Surf Hostel Dulan Beach

In between all of this our surf camps have been going strong. We seem to be getting a mix of traveling families, exchange students and general travelers who are super motivated to learn surfing. Dulan beach is a great place to learn surfing because most of it is sand bottom, and we pretty much have the whole beach to ourselves.

And it’s only a few minutes away from our hostel. When people aren’t stressed out by crowds they seem to learn faster. Our lessons really emphasize panic management, safety and self rescue when things go wrong in the sea. In Asia especially safety is critical because lifeguarded beaches are rare and coastguard rescue often comes when it’s too late.

WAGALIGONG ON SET TV!

The story of boy meets girl

Boy meets Girl in college beach town, South Africa. Boy and Girl spend several wonderful years together, until Girl graduates, lands a decent job and elopes with her department manager. Boy is heartbroken. Boy books ticket to Asia to escape memories of Girl. Boy quickly forgets Girl even existed. Boy eventually settles down in Asian country, starts a family and opens a surf school. He names it WaGaLiGong, which in the local Taiwanese mother language literally means “I talk to you”, or “Now let me tell you something”. True story.

Set TV

Fast forward 15 years. Set TV , a Taiwanese media company which produces a lot of local and cultural content, made a short program about foreigners who have settled in Taiwan and made it their home. The section about WaGaLiGong starts at the 24:55 mark. Thanks to Set TV for the effort!

However, the question on our lips is: how on earth did SET TV get hold of those ancient photos of 22-year-old Mark? The producer really must have spent quite some time searching for those gems. Some of the photos used are from college days, circa late nineties! I’m talking pre-Facebook days. The fact that Set TV managed to dig up these old photos put a huge smile on my face.
